Common freshwater reels

There are three types of Fishing reels that are most common.

Spinning Reels are a fishing reel with a nonmoving spool on which the line is wound by means of a revolving arm which can be disengaged to allow the line to spiral freely off the spool during casting.

• Advantages
  • All around great reel for all types of fishing
  • Can use all types of line.
  • Fairly Inepensive
• Disadvantages
  • They are not the most accurate
  • They can not handle very heavy lures

A simple definition for a baitcaster is a reel that has a revolving spool and sits on top of a casting rod with a trigger handle. This is exactly opposite to a spinning reel, which sits underneath a spinning rod and with the line guides facing down.

• Advantages
  • Very accurate cast
  • Can use all types of line.
  • Very strong and has a lot of torque
• Disadvantages
  • Very difficult to use
  • Can only be used with lures

Baitcaster reel

A Spincast reel is a cross between a Baitcast and Spinning reel. It has a horizontal revolving spool but has the crank of a Baitcaster reel

• Advantages
  • Very cheap
  • Easy to use, Great for beginners
  • Very easy to change hand postions
  • No back lash
• Disadvantages
  • Not very durable
  • Much bulkier and is hard to control casts.
